About PSN

History

The Nigeria Peace and Security Network (PSN), formerly the Peace and Security Working Group, was set up in 2013 to bring together actors working on and interested in peace and security issues. It looked at conflict, peace, and security across Nigeria, with sub-groups focusing on the Niger Delta, the Northeast, and intercommunal violence. It was very active until mid-to-late-2015, particularly in conflict analysis and scenario planning around the 2015 elections. It was rejuvenated in 2016 and took the form of a national network with groups focusing on geographical regions. The Northeast PSN (NE-PSN) does not seek to replicate the work of other platforms in the Northeast, e.g., the Community Peace and Security Partnerships at the LGA level, the Women, Peace, and Security Networks, the INGO Forum, the state-level Civil Society Network, and the sector working groups. Rather, it aims to fill a gap by bringing together organisations working on conflict mitigation, peacebuilding, governance, and security and those interested in mainstreaming conflict sensitivity and peacebuilding perspectives in their work. While doing so, it will link and interface with people doing humanitarian programming as well as sector groups.

The network is member-driven and is currently chaired by Crest Research and Development Institute (CRADI).

Note: The network is not owned by any one organization; it uses a collective model of decision-making in the operations and governance of the network.

What we do

Considering the need for a comprehensive and coordinated approach to peace and security in the Northeast and Nigeria in general, the NE-PSN plays the following roles:

Networking

The NE-PSN collects and shares information among member organizations to enhance conflict mitigation, peacebuilding, security, and governance interventions. Networking activities include early response, sharing programming lessons, committee of practice, and reducing duplication of actions.

Conflict Analysis

Joint conflict analysis is critical to inform effective programming and research, conflict data, early warning, and early response. NE-PSN promotes the use of conflict analysis tools and methodologies to address the root causes of conflicts and promote sustainable peace.

Policy Action

Collaborative policy influencing is a key strategy for NE-PSN. By working with policymakers, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders, the network develops and implements advocacy strategies to promote peace, security, and good governance.

Capacity Building

NE-PSN offers training, cross-organizational learning, and mentorship programs to enhance the capacity of member organizations in conflict mitigation, peacebuilding, security, and governance interventions. Capacity building strengthens the network's ability to promote sustainable peace and security.

Mission

We aim to contribute to peace and development in the Northeast through sustained civic engagement.
